The State Office for Roads and Transport Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has its headquarters in Rostock and is subordinate to the Ministry for Economics, Infrastructure, Tourism and Labour. The State Office supervises the lower roads and road transport authorities. Dr. René Firgt has been its director since 15 August 2019.
The State Office has a two-part organisational structure and is split into the "Administration, Plan Approval and Digitalisation" and "Roads and Transport" departments. The Office is involved in the day-to-day implementation of the provisions of the road traffic regulations, road vehicle licensing regulations, as well as traffic monitoring and road safety, oversize and heavy load transport, public passenger transport, driving licences and driving school licensing.
The State Office is also the public consultation and plan approval authority for transportation projects. In addition, the Office is the legal representative of the state for roads and roads administration matters. The Office buys and sells property, for example, land. It enters into or terminates leasing and rental contracts.
